Where in garden city? Most places in the village are walkable from one of the five train stations or even Mineola station. But if the job is in garden city east then you’re looking at getting from the station to the job too. Otherwise the reverse commute by train isnt so bad.

1001 Franklin Ave, Garden City.
Wife’s future job would likely be in Manhattan and we would rent, don’t want to live on Long Island per se.

I think Westchester or Western CT might be best for commuting into NYC & also for the job or whatever in CT
Also if the job isnt actually lined up (offer letter in hand) there is no job. Wait until you have something solidified before you move. She might not get a job in NYC despite wanting or thinking she will
It’s an easy one mile walk from Mineola station to that office (flat, sidewalks, safe). Rain and snow could be unpleasant. Totally do-able, a lot of trains go through Mineola, and if its only required 1-2 days a week even better.
Commuting from anywhere in Connecticut to Garden City via public transportation is completely insane. This includes the ferry LOL.
By car is doable (though probably painful), especially if you're in one of the close-by Fairfield County towns and it's only 1-2 days a week.
Doable but stressful, and still kind of expensive when you factor in tolls. Years ago I had a great opportunity with a company based in Stamford while still living in Northport. It was a great fit with an incredible compensation plan and I was told to anticipate an offer. But management was only going to hire me if I was willing to relocate my family; they believed that driving round-trip every day would wear me down and I'd eventually quit as a result. I didn't want to lie to get the job and told them I couldn't commit to moving (my wife loved where we lived), so no offer was ever made.
Coincidentally, the following year I wound up consulting for a company in Livingston, NJ and had to drive round-trip every day. I was able to dull the sharp edges of the morning commute by leaving at 5:30 AM thus avoiding the worst of rush hour, but the return drive was easily close to two hours on average, much worse if it rained or snowed. It was awful and I started looking for a new project after a year.

I know of several people who “committed to move” and a couple of years later didn’t.
Unless a company is going to sign me to a contract guaranteeing employment I’m not guaranteeing a move.
Very helpful thread and I really appreciate all the discussion and responses
