Hi everyone,
I was just talking to my friend last week and how this year went without any incidents or big snow storms, and then we get over a foot of snow dumped on us.

How quickly does Suffolk towns clear snow from main and side streets? I've been to some streets especially in hilly areas such as parts of Smithtown, Centerport, Dix Hills, Stony Brook, and I can't imagine those areas being easily cleared, so it would be great to hear from forum members about their experience on snow removal. I am also curious about if they get their dead-end or culdesac's cleared by the town and where do all the snow go if the they clear the street on cul-de-sacs?

In recent years it seems the plow performance has deteriorated in Nassau. State roads and County roads usually have a decent job done, while the secondary roads done by the township are atrocious and sometimes completely undriveable, even in smaller storms than today's. I don't know whether that is on account of retirements, lack of training, lack of overtime budget, or some other factors (there was a large rumor that a storm response 3 years ago was botched to make the new supervisor look bad).

A few years ago when Cuomo tasked the smaller governments with seeking out shared or streamlined servicing, I had heard that there was a proposal for Nassau County to manage all street maintenance, while Town of Hempstead would manage all parks within their jurisdiction. If that is the case, both parties are fools for not pursuing that partnership further.

Never lost power. My area has been plowed 35x the streets are down to asphalt. Always top notch. Town of Huntington hires contractors in my area. They prob do a better job than the town employee plowers.

Power on and street is clear. Town highway employees receive very little training for plowing snow, it’s mostly OTJ training.

I'm on the North Shore, main roads are great, side streets have yet to be plowed completely. Yesterday at about 5PM a single lane was plowed down the middle of the streets, what genius thought of that. TOB uses American Paving for plowing, they should refuse to pay them.

It’s a crapshoot. And it does not matter where you live.
Sometimes it’s good, and sometimes it’s terrible.
I don’t know why. It just is.

Lack of overtime budget?!? For what we pay, these streets should be plowed down to pavement, and salted. Per usual, no fiscal accountability. Where does the money go?!! (That's a rhetorical question)

Never lost power and my street must have been plowed a dozen times. Have to give them props.

Yup I grew up on a narrow dead end street in Huntington and we ALWAYS got plowed fast. I think someone on my street worked for public works, which also happened to be close by.

In Garden City, we had the worst plowing you can imagine with every storm. My 16 year old could do a better job. They do a better job here in Cary, NC when we get snow.

North Shore TOB = Brookhaven? Oyster Bay? I'm in TOB (Babylon).

I was impressed at how quickly and often the plows have some to my side streets. I give them 5-stars for the effort.

Unfortunately, similar quality to your situation. 1.5 lane plowed. I don't want to see what happens when there are two cars headed in different directions.

I'm also surprised at how they plow people in. There are long sections of my street with driveways on only one side of the street. It would make sense to plow the snow on to the side with no driveways. They do the opposite. With the narrow path they have plowed down the middle, my neighbors and I now have a pile of snow 3 feet high that stretches 7+ feet into the street.

I'm going back to parking my cars in front of my driveway when snow is expected. Not like it matters. The unplowed area off the curb is wider than a car.
