Any advice on towns/neighborhoods would be very helpful and greatly appreciated! We've done some research online but it's been overwhelming since we can't scope out the areas in person.
We're both 28 with no kids and won't know anyone in the area so we're hoping for a place that has a good amount of young professionals. We have friends in the city so we'd love to live in Long Island City or Astoria but realize it's not ideal for his commute to work (I work from home). Something in between, or at least close to LIRR would probably be better. Safety is our top priority though.
Other considerations: we'd love to keep it under $3500/month (preferably for a two-bedroom or one-bedroom with den or home-office) but our budget is somewhat flexible.
LIJ (aka Northwell Health) has many locations on Long Island since there's been so much consolidating. Is it the Manhasset location?
Knowing the address would make it easier to make a recommendation
LIJ is Long Island Jewish and located on the Queens/Nassau border.
Look into Forest Hills. It is right off the Grand Central for the drive to LIJ or take the bus to work. You can also take a direct train to Astoria or LIC in 20 min. It is 25 min express train to the City.
Biggest thing with Forest Hills, super safe area. Shopping district, and good food options

Manhasset is North Shore University Hospital or NSUH.
Thank you both for the quick responses! Yes, he'll mainly be at LIJ but will also have some rotations at Stony Brook University Hospital. Not sure if that changes the recommendation since it's in the opposite direction but we'll definitely look into Forest Hills!

There are a couple of nice apartments in your price range in Forest Hills, but the commute to Stony Brook...
IMHO that changes the recommendation - traveling from Forest Hills to Stony Brook is no picnic.
Eastern Nassau County or Western Suffolk would be more tolerable. It depends on how often he has the rotations.
Forest Hills is a solid choice. If he won't be commuting during rush hour, then Long Island City could certainly work. There's certainly a lot more new rental housing with amenities in Long Island City compared to Forest Hills.
How often will he be at Stony Brook? If it's more than 1-2 times a week you may want to look in Nassau County instead of Queens.
I would check out bayside. A lot less congested than FH, and it's easier to have a car. IMO it's a much nicer neighbor too. You also have immediate access to LIRR, and highways. Good luck!
The problem with Forest Hills is the parking. Try to find something with an indoor garage. NYC has alternate side parking, a thing of its own that does not usually exist in other cities.
Another area to consider is Great Neck, which is much closer and home to almost all of the doctors working at the area hospitals. People here are going to blast this suggestion, too many Chinese, too many Orthodox Jews, but if you look at the apartments near the LIRR station and where all the stores are, you will find other young professionals of all races, lol. There's lots of shopping and good public transportation. It's something like a 30 minute ride into Manhattan. If you haven't been to the city since pre-Covid, much has changed. Hopefully, that will be temporary, but it's going to take time for the City to get back on its feet. Great Neck is also a better commute (although not great) to Stony Brook.
How often will he be at SB? It's something like 60 miles or so from LIJ, with lousy public transportation options. That's going to be rough. If he's going to have a daily rotation at SB, maybe you'll be better off looking at some place in between LIJ and Stony Brook.
