It's a shame what happened to Hempstead. My dad grew up there in the 50's & 60's. It was lovely then. My grandfather had a beautiful home too. My dad has very fond memories of the place. It was safe, they walked all over the streets all times of the day.

Times have changed for sure.
Why did they leave if it was so nice?

I think it was earlier than that. When I was a kid growing up there was Best and Company where my mom took my sister and I for haircuts. Also Arnold Constables and A & S. Roosevelt Field had a skating rink and we would go and skate while my mom shopped and dad watched us. That was in the mid 50's. In early 60's they added the second floor and then in the early 70's another floor. That was a huge reason that contributed to the demise of Hempstead. There was also a Woolworths, Cooky's Restaurant, Schiffs outlet, and Empire that all were very busy shops.

For those of us that just don’t get it, can you please explain what the reason for the “huge demise “ of Hempstead was?

As ( young ) teenagers we would take the bus from Roslyn to Hempstead on Thursday nights because the
stores were OPEN !!! Sooo exciting. Woolworth's , WT Grants and all the other neat places .... always
felt safe . Of course , this was in the 1800s .....

For those that don't understand I will send a DM, if requested.
The demographics of the area changed, there I said it.
