As for the OP, to me it doesn't make sense to keep bouncing back and forth from Queens to LI. You should have just stayed here in the first place. The commute from New hyde park to the city isn't bad, and if you decide to move to Herricks SD, you will likely be taking the LIRR from New hyde park anyway, as that's the closest station.
I would just stay in Queens and spend the money on private school, or move out of NY.
I thought the same. The trip to Penn is less than 40 mins.
My back of the napkin calculation was clearly not worth the move financially. Your monthly outlay of mortgage payment and taxes for an average house in that SD plus the costs to buy/sell and move would outweigh the cost of private school. That is unless you could get a house very cheaply.
they stopped beating kids with rulers about 30-40 years ago.
The "discinpline approach" at most NYC catholic schools is quite similar to what's implemented at the private schools you're touting.
I think not. My nephew graduated from Catholic school 5 years ago. What I mean by the discipline approach is the presumption of guilt before innocence and the widespread use of group punishment rather than individual punishment, and the coercion of apologies from those who did no wrong.
Also the science curriculum at Catholic schools is notoriously weak.

I also have similar anecdotal evidence about public schools! Maybe I should start generalizing just like you and tell people ALL public schools are the same way!

Are the best private schools in Queens/ NYC or even LI THAT much better than the top Long island public schools?
Is Archbishop Molloy, the Windsor school, Holy Cross, or the Whitestone Academy significantly better than say, the Herricks district? Or Garden city? Or Great neck south?
I don't know, maybe someone with more knowledge can answer that.
If I still had young kids today, HOMESCHOOL.
Screw the public school system. It’s terrible.
