I can understand why people would want to keep chickens, but goats??
They're nature's lawnmowers. They'll also jump over your fence.

They keep them seasonally at some NYC parks but they live year-round at the Norman Levy Preserve in Merrick.

Hempstead Town has a zoning ordinance barring fowl or any other animals "wild in their natural habitat."

With just hens, you may get away with it if you're neat and clean, and have a good relationship with the neighbors. Rooster is a sure fire way to have a complaint filed.

I would think that, neighbor-wise, much would depend on the size of the lots. In a neighborhood that has minimum one-half or 1-acre zoning, a few hens probably wouldn't raise any hackles. But in a development with 1/4 or 1/3 acre lots, neighbors might not be so tolerant.

Even a half acre is small. Sound travels. So does stink.
I know by LI standards 1/2 acre is considered huge, but in reality it’s not.
I’m anti government and rebellious so I do what I want on my land.
60x100 or 60 acres I don’t care. Admittedly, I’m a bit of a hypocrite/nimby because I want to do whatever the hell I want on my land, but don’t necessarily feel the same about neighbors. I’m also smart enough to realize I can’t have it my way, and only my way.
So I did in fact, move. To where I have no neighbors. Now, I can totally do whatever the hell I goddam want without a worry in the world.

Chickens are the most filthy animals on the planet. They will live in their own crap. Pigs are clean as hell. Who the hell would want to have these things in a residential backyard? Just get a dog and buy your dozen eggs for $2 at the store. I would never want these things in my yard.

Fair point. We are in a half-acre-zoned neighborhood and I would be driven around the bend in short order if a next door neighbor had a barking dog or shrieking kids in their pool all summer. The house behind us just went up for sale the other day and I am just hoping the new owners don't have either of those. The current owners are perfect: We never see or hear them, lol.

Our next door neighbor has a wood burning stove and I curse under my breath every time they fire it up (they also had a smoker on their patio this summer, which I hate equally.) I don't hate the smell of woodsmoke per se, but (a) we do NOT want it inside our house, which means we don't open the windows at times when we otherwise would if they didn't have the (*&%@! wood burning stove and/or smoker; and (b) I have dry-eye syndrome which means if I'm in the yard when they use either, my eyes start stinging and buring like hell after only a few minutes. I dearly wish they didn't have the stove and smoker, but it's their house and yard and the problem with those things are on my end - I've no right to complain, and so I don't. So we close our windows and/or I go indoors when they are using them.

That said, we've never smelled anything out of the ordinary when we visit my sister whose neighbor has all those chickens. And I am blessed/cursed with a hypersensitive sense of smell (my nickname in the family is The Bloodhound) so trust me: If there was any odor, I'd notice it immediately. The coop itself is probably...hmmm... probably 100 ft from their shared fence, IIRC. Maybe that's why? But the chickens do roam freely through the neighbor's 1-acre-plus property during the daylight hours, though, she says.

And that’s the way to do it. You are indeed a rare person to actually have any consideration for your neighbors. Not many of us left.

Nassau County is crawling with rats (the 4 legged ones, not the usual 2 legged ones). A chicken coop would be a perfect invitation for an infestation. Not likely they'll be issuing any chicken coop variances soon, at least not town of hempstead.

I always *try* to do the right thing. Even if it’s at my expense. I know I can’t change the world, but I CAN change MY world. Kinda sorta.
