Hi all,

I'm looking to renovate/remodel bathrooms and a kitchen on a home I'm closing on soon, trying to avoid general contractors and just DIY (over several years), will use licensed electricians/plumbers/etc. for specialty work as required by NYS - just wondering what permits, if any, I need for the following:

1. Bathrooms - demo and getting rid of old vanity, toilet, stand in shower; installing bath tub, no plumbing modification; no structural modification.

2. Kitchen - demo and floor refinish, removal of wall in between dining area and kitchen, new cabinets, new appliances etc.

3. Floor refinishing - pulling up old carpet/vinyl tiles, and sanding/refinishing hardwood floors

I'm assuming I need a building permit for both the bathroom and kitchen? Both have further specific document requirements for bathroom/kitchen renovations (drawings etc.); kitchen I know for sure since I will be removing a wall, wasn't so sure about the bathrooms because I'm not doing any structural/plumbing modification. Don't think I need a permit for refinishing any floors, right? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I wouldn't get a permit for anything that didn't extend the footprint of my house.

Appreciate the reply. No concerns about CO/permit surprises later on when selling the home? Also I've read on this board that there is a possibility of neighbors narcing on other neighbors they suspect are doing work without permits and leading to the "stop work" notices and penalties. Just trying to avoid any unneeded stress when possible.

You may need one for the kitchen, only due to the wall removal. Just be sure it is not a load bearing wall.

1 and 3 can and should be done easy Diy.

2 for the wall removal yes if you want to go that route use architect for drawing and town for permit and all the legit people.

I would do the wall removal first with inspection.
then for rest of the kitchen and what not just replacements won't need a permit.

I am telling you to remove or inspect the wall removal 1sr because if you did all 1 2 3 simultaneously the inspector may hassle you.

If you are going from a stall shower to a bathtub, there is a good chance you will need structural and plumbing modifications.
