Hi there! My wife and I (newly married!) have family in Bayside, Queens that we want to be close to. We're looking to buy our first home in Long Island. We both work from home and don't have kids yet, though are planning to in a few years.
We don't know much about the different neighborhoods in Long Island so would love to get some local recommendations on areas we should focus our search on!
Here's a bit about us and our criteria:
- max 30 minute drive from Bayside, Queens, the closer the better though
- max budget ~$650K, minimum 2-3 bds
- having the "best" schools doesn't matter to us
- being close-ish to a LIRR station, in case we have to commute into the city down the road
- We want to live in a place where we feel a sense of cultural openness, belonging, and community. We're both first-generation Asian Americans who've lived in big cities and rural middle-of-nowheres across the US. While we do want some representation of people who look like us, cultural openness and a sense of community regardless of color matters more to us than having a high % of Asians, for example.
We have visited a few areas in LI so far that seem to be in our budget: Floral Park, Hicksville, Plainview (which is about as far east as we'll go). We like the vibes in Floral Park the best so far.
We're excited at all places to explore and people to meet during the rest of our home search, we're curious to hear which areas in LI we should look into! Thanks for reading.
Plainview is a nice town, only complaint is the high taxes. Not so sure about Hicksville anymore. Heard the SD is going down hill. From Plainview you can get to Bayside with no traffic in 15-20 minutes.

Not sure of the prices there now, but New Hyde park is another one to look into. Floral Park is good too.

Plainview is a good town but might be out of OP's budget. Anything decent is $700k+ now.
Why would you want to stay in this state if you work from home. Move far and buy and great home with land to spare with views.
Your kids will thank you later in life.

The first sentence of his post said that he wants to live near family in Bayside.
