Have a child with an IEP receiving SP under CPSE, will enter Kindergarten in Sep, what's the process to approach for getting services for focus/communication under CSE. I heard default would to fight for services in CSE as they will not provide, we are going for an evaluation from the school district. Or should we get an evaluation from an outside source, and will that be counted? Not sure, where to start here. Where to look for special education student advocates? Any suggestions please?

Have you contacted your district's SEPTA for suggestions?

I know that CSE services are often less than what you get with CPSE.

Why are you getting an advocate when the district hasnt even brought up the idea of discontinuing services? Your child will get a standardized test to quantify their degree of disability. If the degree of disability is statistically significant, they will qualify for services.

Pro tip - due to the "statistically significant" thing - make sure you schedule the evaluation AFTER your child's monthly birthday. Had my child evaluated on the 25th when he was born on the 27th. They denied him as being appropriate for his age, but if I had waited 3 days he would have gotten services. So we were denied, and then when he actually got into kindergarten they said he needed speech.

Also be honest about what your child needs. Make sure the classification is accurate. Preschool uses speech and language classification a lot, maybe too much.

You mention focus issues. Is it bad enough to warrant a classification of adhd?

Classification helps drive what services are available.

And Twingles is correct about how age can influence score, especially in younger kids

Default Re-evaluation

We would need to request re-evaluation, because CPSE is outright denying evaluation on the phone citing COunty would not pay for another evaluation (our child was evaluated last year at 3 years old). Now they are saying at 4 years child too old for evaluation under CPSE, as she will enter Kindergarten in Sep. We are arguing she is still in Pre-K and needs evaluation right now, as her teacher is citing comprehension/focus/response issues in group. Now if we say focus, CPSE instantly says she needs to wwait till 6 years old for adhd evaluation. So we need to write a letter to the SE Director with the correct vocabulary citing these issues. WHich is why I'm looking for some educational advocates as well on the side, this is going to be an uphill battle even for evaluation and later services.

If you think your child has a medical issue that requires evaluation, use your medical insurance to get an evaluation from a pediatric neurologist. Dont wait for the school.
