Good morning friends! Happy Sunday, nice day out today, good day for a walk or a jog.

My question is concerning housing and tax abatements. This is probably incorrect, but is it true that if you buy a new construction house in Long island that you get an abatement on your property taxes for the first 10 or 15 years? Or some type of tax break?

A friend of mine said that in order to foster "new building and new development" on LI, that people who buy new construction houses get a break on their taxes. This doesnt' sound right to me though, as I know that the only people who usually qualify for tax abatements on property are seniors and veterans in some cases.
My grandma is in a 55+ community and she gets a 50% tax abatement in her taxes every year through the town of Oyster Bay and the state.

But I am talking about regular old middle class people like us. My fiance and I are currently looking at houses post-Covid, and it seems they have come down a tad from the peak, but still very high.

There was a bill for first time home buyers to receive a tax credit of 10% of the price of the home with a max credit of $15k but it is still just a bill and not enacted as of yet, unless I have missed it.

In Nassau County, there is an exemption for certain renovations that decreases annually for 8 years. It is the home improvement exemption, but that does not apply to new builds.

NYS approved a 8 year phase-in exemption to property taxes for new constructions last year.
