As many of you may know - since NICE bus took over the bus routes in nassau county the bus system has deteriorated a bit

The MTA is a monopoly but they seem to have a grasp on operating bus/train lines

So aside from giving back the MTA complete control over the bus system and redesigning it - what would be some decent improvements to the buses in nassau?

I think a step in the right direction would be to bring back the MTA for a few express routes at least
For example- test out a express bus from perhaps a train station in Nassau direct to NYC - which we currently do not have any

It will be an uphill climb.
No one really wants to use the bus system to get around Nassau unless they have to (low-income/no car, etc.).
There's a perception (rooted in reality) that the bus system is for black/brown people.

The MTA used to coordinate connecting bus services with the LIRR, but those days are gone.
The N6X which is likely NICE's busiest route connecting Hempstead to Jamaica via Hempstead Tpke and then to the F train. Ever taken that ride. Long, uncomfortable and not something most professionals would be willing to do.

Attracting professionals to the bus system would be necessary to improve service, but that ship has sailed.

As far as direct bus service to NYC like NJ Transit has to Port Authority..it's unlikely...the LIRR pretty much covers all places unlike NJ Transit and is faster than any bus on the LIE into Manhattan. You would need a more comfortable bus like the Staten Island/Queens express MTA buses that go into the city, but that ride comes at a premium price.

NICE focus should be service to Hempstead, Roosevelt Field, Mineola, etc.

Professionals never took the NICE or LIB when it was part of MTA. I don't ever see it happening. They all either drive, LIRR or combo.

Nassau bus system mostly caters to working class people of all colors

Nassau needs light rail, not buses

Not sure if ethnicity has anything to do with this - but it seems like there was somewhat a mentality that "most people on long island in general have cars" and doing things like taking the bus and whatnot is for inferior people

But with that aside - perhaps long island is congested with car traffic due to the fact that the public transit system leaves a bit to be desired
Maybe it seems many people would rather drive their cars on long island not because they want to - but because they have little other efficient options
Taxis/ride sharing services can be expensive
And with the rising costs of fuel and new car shortages - improvements to the public transit system is looking more like in the best interest of Nassau county residents and long islanders in general

This may be the most delusional statement I have ever read! Nobody wants to take public transportation, especially when they have a car as most LI people do. Even if we had amazing mass transit, why would you pay $6 round trip when even at $4 a gallon it would probably be cheaper to drive a car you already have. The ONLY people using public transit on LI are people w/o cars. This isn't NYC where it's gridlock 18 hours a day.

Not sure why you think it is so delusional
The point is simply a better transit system would make it more accessible to more people who may otherwise would reconsider
And its a bit of a stretch to think that the only people who would use/do use public transit on LI are people without cars
Traffic congestion and parking are issues on Long island - especially as the population has grown over time
A better mass transit system would put less of a strain on that

This isnt the Long island of the 1950s - or even the 1970s for that matter anymore

reality is most long islanders don’t want to take mass transit. So that leaves the lower income nyc folks that needs it to get into LI for the bus system.

Say a family of 4 takes LIRR off peak to Penn Station (zone 1 to zone 4). $9.25 X 4 people=. $37. Roundtrip $72. That doesn’t include nyc subway fare. I would rather drive to nyc than pay $72+. Mass transit isn’t very cost effect for many unless its daily commute to work.

There is little desire for many tax paying LIers to dump money into mass transit.

Yes its understandable that due to inflation and whatnot many people are going to be very hesitant to want to pay any extra taxes/fees for anything

But as far as the transit system - i think it wouldnt hurt to bring a couple MTA operated bus lines back to Nassau/LI
Coordinated with train schedules preferably
