“Change concerns people,” said Henry Grishman, superintendent of Jericho schools. “Historically, we look like this. And now our district is changing and, ‘What does that mean for my kid and my family?’ ”
Well, Henry, it depends what that change is. In your district, the change is Asians replacing Jews, both of whom are traditionally strong groups of students. Net effect: district stays good, albeit not a whole lot of fun for the other kids in the summer when the Jewish kids go away to expensive sleepaway camps and the Asian kids go to Kumon to learn the next school year's math lessons.

In other places, not as rosy. The addition of lots of Hispanics to Hempstead has resulted in literal race wars in the cafeteria and a sub-30% graduation rate.

It looks like that isn't the case anymore: https://data.nysed.gov/profile.php?instid=800000049863

Not great, but way better than "sub 30%".

I'm also wondering if the creation of this charter school in the village has something to do with that, in terms of being able to give more resources/attention to the students at HHS: https://data.nysed.gov/profile.php?instid=800000063985

2015 51%
2016 57%
2017 44%
2018 57%
2019 62%
2020 81%
2021 76%

Maybe, as that is quite the jump, but it is not "sub 30 percent". With that said, it looks like more are going with the charter option in the village(and Uniondale) with similar demographics and much better results.

I don't think the charter schools are the reason. They also have very low outcomes.

While there are some that have low outcomes, many(if not most) actually have very good results like the Academy Charter School does. Look up charters across the state like Syracuse Academy of Science, Buffalo charters such as Tapestry and Health Sciences, Green Tech in Albany, Utica Academy of Science, University Prep for Young Men in Rochester and Eagle Academy II in Brooklyn, among others, for examples.

Academy Charter School - 49% of students are at least proficient in math and 31% in reading.

Ridiculous.

Where do you see that and for what levels? What year? I'm asking due to this pre COVID information, unless I'm reading it incorrectly: https://data.nysed.gov/assessment38....d=800000063985

“No child left behind” is one reason we have a generation of jello brained emotionally retarded zombies on the streets.

Just partly. Like many programs, both governmental and private, in theory the program has a lot of merit. The fine details and execution is where the problems started to unravel and then of course before we can review and make modifications, we have to change it again.

I taught for several years back in the Stone Age - long, long before NCLB. But have several teachers among our family and friends. NCLB became and indictment of the schools ability to effectively teach, among other things and so over the course of time it had to morph into the Every Student Succeeds Act or ESSA. This changes the "authority" or responsibility form Federal to states, read add another excuse.

I so long for the days when the SRA reading kit was the benchmark for all readers. But then again, I am getting old.
