“ Labor unions, along with small business organizations and industry groups are urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to back a plan that would enable Belmont Park on Long Island to undergo a major renovation project.
The coalition of organizations, We Are NY Horse Racing, has formed to boost the project, which needs bonding authority approved by state officials in order for the New York Racing Association to move forward.”
I am sure construction unions would back anything that would get them more money.
Horse racing is dead. Who needs to go to the track to place a bet? OTB, mobile betting apps are used much more.
UBS arena did nothing for the local community. People do not shop locally. They go the arena then go home. The train stations are inside the arena property so no one is stopping at a deli to grab something to eat or drink on the way home. Why would Belmont Park be any different?
How about instead of useless spending, we get a tax refund instead?

Dude, it's Belmont home of the Belmont stakes, it's not going anywhere. This is all part of the bigger plan for the area that was more than just the arena. The plan is to demo the old grandstands and "flip it" to where the backstretch now is, build a new grandstand facility on the other side, a Marriott is supposed to be built attached the the arena where the grandstands currently are. They are also currently building the shopping/entertainment complex on the property as well.

We will never see the return on the investment. Hotel will get a tax abatement as will the shopping complex. Put some lipstick on Belmont and call it a day.
1 day of the racing season they get more than a thousand folks in the seats. The other days are empty.
Now we get the same grand plan at the old Coliseum. Shopping , Casino etc. Meanwhile in the real world brick and mortar shopping and Casino revenues are falling. So we are going to put 2 of them within 10 miles of each other?

Ok so what’s your suggestion? Do nothing? Let the colosseum and old Belmont just rot abandoned? Yeah that will be just great for the area
Belmont just needs some modernization and most important maintenance of what you updated. You dont need everything else done.
If you are still.going to fix up Belmont then you dont need to make Belmont2.0 at the Coliseum. Winthrop is looking for a new place. Sloan wanted to expand their presence there too.
Make it a medical incubator.
To keep Hochul happy you could also offer it as medical.tourism.for abortions as well.

I agree with you a medical hub would be far better than a casino (although Sands said they will move forward with an entertainment venue even if they can’t get a gaming license)

As if you couldn't tell by my down beat postings lol, I have no faith at all in NY and LI's ability to do anything right. I have lived here my whole life and seen it all.
This plan is about 10 to 15 years too late. Retail is in the skids, casinos are losing money, and stadiums have never been shown to be a benefit financially to the community or state. It reminds me of what we see now with gas lines being replaced as the state announces natural gas will basically be gone as an available source of heating and cooking in 7 years.
One thing you can be sure of is whichever companies/unions get the contract to build this fiasco will have been strong contributors to Hochul. Pay to play is the backbone of this state and administration.

We are far more likely to see more development at Belmont. The State has at least shown their desire to work with developers (albeit connected ones) instead of toying around with them like Nassau/TOH.
Even with abatements, these places have to be bringing in more tax revenue than the ZERO being generated on the land now.
