I know, this is very last minute. We need a good accountant that can reduce the amount we owe for personal taxes. I am using Turbo Tax but we owe about $20K due to not having enough withheld last year. My wife usually gets a W2 from the few agencies she works through (ABA specialist doing Autism interventions) but for some reason, a couple of agencies withheld nothing and the main one gave her a 1099. That said, there are probably far more deductions she can take than my Turbo Tax is showing me. I got three days to do this so any recommendations would be appreciated. Preferably in the Nassau (west Suffolk area). Thanks.

You’re cutting it close. Maybe file for an extension, gives you more time to find the right firm instead of panic picking. You’re gonna need someone really sharp to do what it sounds like you want to do.

An accountant won’t be a magician you can deduct the following as a 1099. You may not have the correct versions of turbo tax not all can do those deductions.

Mileage

Health insurance premiums

Home office deduction

Work supplies

Travel

Car expenses

Cell phone cost

Business insurance

Commissions or fees

Depreciation of assets

SEP IRA contributions on the 1099 income. That can be a good write off but it needs to be done before the cut off for filing taxes.

Next year be sure to do estimated quarterly taxes for the 1099 income.

I thought the standard deduction is like $25,900 or something like that? I was in the same spot 2 years ago, but not close to $20k owed, because we didn’t withhold enough. Was told there is only so much that can be done. The numbers are the numbers.

Don't try any of this without the advice of a tax professional.

Good luck.
