my premiums with Kemper went up 22% compared to last year. Is it worth shopping around for a new policy or is the rate increase across the board?

Definitely worth shopping around. Had State Farm for many years, switched to geico for lower premiums then shopped around again after geico went up significantly. Now back with State Farm since they were lower than geico. Got an offer from work for a Farmers discount but they were higher than State Farm so still with them for now.

You can thank COVID. The cost of housing has increased, the cost of goods has increased. Replacement values have increased and it gets passed along. I have been hearing a lot of this lately.

Both went up but not by much.
Shop around.

Just a suggestion, increase your Personal Injury Protection to $150,000. This protects you and your passengers if you are injured in an accident. This is for your medical bills. Shouldn't increase your premium by much.

And to answer the OP question it always pays to shop your insurance. Rates are always changing. Try to find an independent agent as they can get quotes from different companies.

I handled PIP claims for a year and have been an adjuster for over 30 - can count on one hand the number of times anyone needed it, but you're right it's cheap. Most insurers will cut you off before you get close to $10K in payouts.

My homeowners went up about 10%, auto stayed about the same.

Everyone should be aware that NY law now adds supplemental spousal liability insurance to every auto policy even if you don’t have a spouse unless you specifically decline the insurance. I don’t have a spouse so I declined the coverage.

“Effective 8/1/23, New York law requires Supplemental Spousal Liability insurance to be included in your insurance policy unless specifically declined by the named insured in writing.”

You think homeowners, and auto insurance are bad here? Check out Florida. If you can even get homeowners where you live in Florida, the rates are to the moon. In some places you can't even get homeowners thru insurance companies, as they have all pulled out of areas, especially coastal areas. Then they have to turn to the state of Florida as the insurance company of last resort.
