At risk of repeating oneself; Santos isn't going anywhere.....
It's not worth bother for NYS democrats and governor to deal with naming a replacement and calling a special election for an office that's up for election barely 10 or so months from now (primaries).
You've got 222 republicans in House versus 213 democrats.
In a perfect world even with that slim majority GOP could afford to lose one or two members. However we're dealing with a majority who behave more like fractions of warring tribes than a cohesive unit. Thus every single potential vote counts.
More to point you have elements of GOP in House that just don't give an eff what Speaker or establishment members of their caucus say or want them to do. Long as they are in safe districts (see Matt Gaetz) they have little to fear.
If this were prior to the ethics report, I would agree with you, but after that it appears to have changed. I agree Gaetz and company are likely no votes on voting to expel, but the GOP House Leadership isn't pushing it either way. It certainly appears there are 90 GOP votes to oust, which is what is needed with Democrats going to be pretty much unanimous in the vote to oust.
Just to note, there would not be a named replacement if he were to be expelled. The seat would remain vacant until a Special Election can be held.
Basically his press conference was him making threats to release the dirt without going into detail and to call for Bowman to be expelled which will go nowhere.
Vote appears to be scheduled for tomorrow. The Privileged Resolution filed on Tuesday by Garcia & Goldman would have required a vote by today, but appears they will not force the vote due to the initial resolution by Guest moving forward and set for tomorrow.
Now i'm just waiting for the Dems to now do the same with Menendez in the Senate......
We will see if anything happens there. My guess would be before it would come up to have a legit chance of happening it would be referred to the Ethics Committee first as Santos's was (which was a six month process in this case). Most Democrats in the Senate have called on Menendez to resign, outside of Fetterman I don't think anyone on either side has called on him to be expelled yet. It is also worth noting, Republicans across the board in the Senate have been very quiet on Menendez.
