I have been visiting this site for a while now, looking at everyone's questions asking for various types of advice. So...I figured I might as well put my question out there for everyone to help. We (my fiance and I) want to move from Brooklyn to Long Island. She works with the Dept. of Ed. (so great benefits, retirement, etc.) we don't want her to leave her current school, as guidance counselor positions are hard to come by. We are looking for somewhere in Nassau that will not be more than an hour away from Brooklyn. She starts work at 730 so that may be a plus in terms of the commute. We can only afford a starter home unless we find someone who just wants to sell, our price range is 350-400, more if home is a "mother daughter". What are some areas we should be looking at for our price range and good school districts? We are considering Oceanside, maybe parts of Valley Stream, Lynbrook, but are open to anywhere where the commute will be somewhat tolerable. Thanks in advance for your comments. Dontknowwhattosay--->we're in the same boat, but you just have to find your house and let everyone else deal with their own prejudices..I can understand peoples' apprehension of differences as long as it's not violent who cares! Hopefully everyone on the block won't turn a cold shoulder.

You might want to try western Suffolk. I just retired from the Board of Ed (Resource Room) and I made that commute for 28 years. Yes, guidance position and all out of classroom jobs are very hard to come by. You would probably be more likely to find something in your range in Lindenhurst maybe. Good luck !

Where in Brooklyn? My grandmother commuted from Baldwin to Bay Ridge for 45 years (she retired in 2004) and it gets brutal on the Belt. She retired more because of the commute than because of working. That would be the big downside of looking on the South Shore.
If she works near the station you might want to consider using the train.
My 2 cents... One website that you can use is zillow.com
You can see the values of different neighborhoods.
FYI - Since this is a starter home, you could look at FHA loan's with low money down. compared to conventional loans.
