the best estes are generally behind big gates & usually can't be seen from the road.
If you want to see charm & beauty & maybe glimspe at a few estates wait for the leaves to fall of the trees & drive around in Water Mill, Bridgehampton & Southampton.
A nice ride is to take Berry Hill Road from 25A north towards Oyster Bay Cove. About a mile up where the road curves to the left, keep going straight onto Sandy Hill Road.
Roslyn, Roslyn Estates, Brookville, Old Brookville, Upper Brookville, Manhasset, and Sands Point are my faves on the North Shore. Throughout most of Brookville though you really can't see some of the best mansions from the street.

I'll one up you, Crooks. I'd rather have a house on Strong's Neck than Belle Terre. Both touch Port Jeff harbor, but the waterfront homes on Strongs Neck actually have floating docks in their backyards (a perfect spot for my wooden sail boat) while the Belle Terre homes are up on the bluff and not at sea level. (Which I guess is a benefit when flood season arrives).
Plus you can get waterfront property on Strong's Neck for less than $2 mil and the taxes don't usually break $30K - not bad considering what you get. Definitely not a starter house, but maybe something to look into in your forties.
This leads to my next point. The best way to see the real LI 'estates' is to borrow a friend's boat and spend a day slowly cruising along the North Shore from Port Jeff all the way to King's Point (making sure to stop in all of the harbors along the way). I plan to make that trip one day.
The old estates you can get the closest to are the ones that aren't peoples homes anymore. The Webb institute in Glen Cove was used for the exterior shots in the 3rd Batman movie (the lions out front). I knew someone who went there and I've been inside it. It isn't public, but you can drive into the parking lot without getting hassled.
Old Westbury Gardens is another, and there's a catering hall up off Dsoris that can be seen from the road.
Also, the Nassau Museum of Art and the Holocaust Museums are both in/near Roslyn, those are on old estates.
Also, there are the 2 mansions right across from each other in Sands Point that you can walk around and everything. In Suffolk, the Bayard Cutting Arboretum is an old estate..a nice place to spend a day walking around.

Don't forget Coe Hall at Planting Fields Arboretum in Upper Brookville. Beautiful mansion and beautiful grounds. They have an exhibit on Chocolate going on there right now.
