I'm going back to school in the Summer/Fall. I'm looking into Nassau Community College. My major is a toss up between LPN, and Radiation Therapy Tech. Both fields interest me very much. Can anyone offer me any advice or insite on what's it's like to be anyone of these?

See if you can get into NCC's RN program. Much higher salary than either LPN or Radiation Therapy Tech, plus you can do it in 2 years. There are also BS programs for RN, but the pay rate is not significantly different (a matter of mere cents per hour for having a BS) to make up for the cost of 2 more years of school. Since many hospitals give tuition reimbursement, you could get in as an RN with an Associate's degree and then acquire the BS on their dime later if you want to. Also, hospitals must have RNs, but are cutting down on everyone else they can get away with, including LPNs. Plus if you eventually want to move elsewhere in the country, RNs are in demand everywhere.

If you want to do an LPN program, don't go to NCC! If u want to go to NCC u might as well do the RN program because the same classes they offer for the LPN are the same classes that go toward ur RN! i don't know much about the radiation thing so that must mean that they're not in high demand. Ur best bet is to go for the RN but if you don't want to do 2 yrs of school the LPN is ok cuz it only takes a yr. U will start by making between $21-$29/hour depending on where u work. most hospitals don't hire LPN's anymore, but as an LPN I wouldn't want to work in a hospital anyway because I'd be overworked and underpaid. In a hospital an LPN is allowed to do everything an RN does except hang a blood transfusion! Therefore u will be doing RN work for LPN money! I don't fance nursing homes much either becuz it's a depressing environment and u will be paid the least possible salary that an lpn can make! Most places however require that you have at least 6 months of nursing home experience before they will hire you. . .in my case I did a few months and I've worked for staffing agencies like White Glove. My best paying and least stressful job so far has been in pediatric home care, hence i've been doing it for 3 yrs. I would recommend you do ur RN because you will start with at least $35/hr and even tho it's easy for an lpn to land a job, an RN is in higher demand. I plan on completing it as well. Good luck in ur endeavors!
