Hi all. I am looking for a family place to go on vacation over Easter break-not expensive-that would be a 2-3 hour car ride away. Is there such a magical place? I do not want to hang out at home for the 3rd school vacation this year. Thanks.
you can try the Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos---it is a kid oriented hotel with an indoor waterpark on-site...they have different priced rooms depending on what you want to spend. The hotel has storytelling at night in the lobby and various other kids stuff.
Good luck

Mystic Aquarium, Seaport, Olde Mystik Village, etc...Would kill a day or two. Not sure of your children's ages, as it might be a little light on teenage activities. Most importantly...it is only 15 minutes or so from the casinos...oh wait, you said family place .
It's a little further than 3 hours, but Lancaster is a great place to get away to as well. My grandparents used to take my Brother and me when we were young. There's the Amish Village or there's Hershey park or other great things to do depending on your kids ages.

Philly has a lot of fun stuff to do (the Please Touch museum is great if you have little kids--don't know how old yours are, I believe it's recommended for under-7s) and isn't far.
It depends on what you are looking for in your mini-vacation, what ages your kids are and what you are willing to spend. Some of our best vacations have been quick getaways to interesting places. They did not require five star hotels, just some planning ahead.
Wherever you go, try booking your hotel by bidding on Priceline. I have gotten some really outstanding deals through it this past year when traveling with my son on his college search, paying from $55 to $150 depending on location and availability for 3* and 4* hotels. Often breakfast of some sort was included. The center of major cities are always more expensive and the outskirts less.
Boston is only 3 hrs from the New London ferry. My kids love it. There's lots to do and see there, and nearby - Plymouth Plantation, Salem, Concord & Lexington - depending on your interests.
Philly is nice too, but less to do if you are looking to stay for a several day getaway. Staying just outside in the suburbs will save you lots. There are lots of business hotels which seem to have rooms far more reasonably than those in the city proper.
Lancaster is interesting, plus Gettysburg is nearby. However, the area is quite a drive from some points on LI.
DC is wonderful and unforgettable with tons to do for all ages - plus all the museums are free, but it's a very long drive, 5-7 hours depending on where you live. It might well be worth it.
