Both N Merrick and S. Merrick are considered very good. If education is the deciding factor, South has a better reputation, but it's defiantly a more affluent area.

I'm in Wantagh born and raised, and still a nice place to be.

Yes, I know about the football scandal, but outside of an isolated incident like that, j/w for my own research.

To the OP- I promise not to take the question any further than this. Just researching that area too and would like to know the "consensus" on this.
Mepham is probably thought of a notch below, but there is probably less of a drug problem and not as many daddy's mercedes in the parking lot than at JFK. Just a bit more down to earth, I'd say.

Here's another question that fits into the N v. S controversy-
We are considering 2 homes - home A is located between Sunrise & Merrick Rds. In Merrick SD but has a very small yard and the street its on is just ok looking in my opinion. It is slightly larger than house B.
House B is located in the Wenshaw Park area of N. Merrick on a very quaint and pretty block. House B has a substantial backyard - 40 feet deeper than house A. House B is in N Bellmore schools. We like the look and location of this house over House A.
House A is listed slightly higher than house B.
Whatever house we choose we plan to live in 10 plus years, thus our 15 month old will likely go through the schools there. We are NYC commuters who like to enjoy our home & neighborhood.
We also like to entertain friends, extended family so having the bigger yard would be nice.Given these factors which is the better bet?

How many non-Levittown hamlets does Levittown extend into? I've seen parts of Hicksville and Wantagh that look very Levittown-y.

Parts of East Meadow and "Salisbury" (southern Westbury) also look like Levittown.

The wikipedia article states that the Levittown development is in Levittown, Seaford, Wantagh, Salisbury, Hicksville, and Plainedge.

Why didn't it all get absorbed into Levittown? And it's interesting that Levittown has such a large population for an LI hamlet, I'm guessing it's because it's geographically large rather than dense. And I wonder how many of the Levitt houses are in their original form and don't have add-ons.

And is it just me, or is Long Island more diverse than people give it credit for? Many of the places thought of as being lily white like Levittown are 10-20% minority. And then there are places like Baldwin and Freeport with a mix of white, black, and Hispanic.
