I just turned 28 and have lived in Albany since college (freshman in 1997). I'd move back to LI in a heartbeat if I could afford it. Taxes are more expensive here per thousand dollars of value, and the weather, corruption, potholes and depressed economy aren't compelling reasons to stay, either. Some suggest I leave the state, but I've been around the country and around the world, and there is no place like LI. Of course, every region is unique, but there is something very special about LI that I did not realize when I grew up there. The only problem is, though, that I could never afford to buy a decent home there for my family. Maybe one day, but not anytime soon...
For now I'll just visit my parents and friends once a month. If anyone has a nice family home on the south shore to sell for 300k - well - I guess that's a silly question...
Oh my, I'm having a major fit of the giggles here as a result of the last word in that sentence.... I know you meant to write "stripers", as in striped bass, but the mental picture of hordes of fishermen lining up waiting for the next "school" of X-rated dancers to swim by is just simply.... priceless.
Thanks for the best laugh I have had this month!
Hi Windflower,
So glad I made your month with that slip. At first, I was embarrassed (and let’s not too carefully scrutinize that word). Then I had a good laugh as well. The post was a bit bloated – a grandfalloon as the late Mr. Vonnegut would say - and richly deserving of an inadvertent, self-inflicted pinpri** to let some of the air out.
All best
