We may be moving to Long Island, and one of us would work in Huntington, and the other in the city. We have one car for the commute within Long Island. While Huntington might be an ok place to live, the commute to NYC would be long, housing is expensive, and it's very suburban. Can you recommend places to live that are safe, relatively affordable (if there is such a thing), are commute friendly for both of us, and less suburban than most of Long Island? We'd prefer to rent an apartment as opposed to a house, and want to be able to walk to restaurants, shops, etc. We're a young couple, we have a baby, and we really don't want to be stuck in expensive suburbia.

If you think Huntington is expensive, you are in for a rude awakening when it comes to anything between there and Manhattan. As you get closer to the city, housing becomes more expensive, unless you are living in a neighborhood regarded as "unsafe". There are many great places to live between Huntington and NYC, but they are all as expensive, or more expensive.

I know it's all incredibly expensive, but from what I've found, housing in Queens, for example, is less expensive than Huntington! (Lots more to choose from too, and less need to use a broker...) We don't need tons of space, and prefer location over space.

Theres some great apartment options in Babylon Village.

You can walk to the train with good express service.
Near ocean beaches and its 20 Min to Huntington.

2nd Choice....Farmingdale.
No beaches though.

Thanks, I could care less about beaches!

What about Hicksville?

Also---on a map, both Babylon and Farmingdale look to be in the wrong direction of the city....south of Huntington, rather than west.....is the commute into the city really better from Babylon or Farmingdale than Huntington??

It's very centrally located, but is basically suburbia gone all wrong.

Crazy traffic, congested, noisy....blech.

I don't think you are going to find many towns/villages (just trying to head off Walter Greenspan) that are less "suburbia" than Huntington. It's often called "Manhattan East" because of its diversity, cultural offerings and nightlife.

SOunds like you might be happier in Queens..commute to Huntington wouldn't be too bad. I commuted from Huntington to Queens for awhile and it wasn't bad, and that was going with the traffic. No, I don't live in HUntington anymore, just a shameless plug for the old hometown.
