Another example of NEWSDAY mistaking the community name in a place's mailing address for the community in which that place is located:

Riverhead benefit raises money for Suffolk SPCA -- Newsday.com (http://www.newsday.com/services/newspaper/printedition/sunday/longisland/ny-lispca1212962618jul11,0,419207.story - broken link)

In the second paragraph, the article states, "The four-footed performers were all in presentations yesterday at the first Summer Party for the Animals to benefit the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held at Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead."

According to the Census Bureau's online address search function, American FactFinder (http://tinyurl.com/hd4p - broken link) , located at 6025 Sound Avenue, Martha Clara Vineyards is in Northville ("Riverhead, NY 11901" mailing address).

In other words, if you want to send a letter to Martha Clara Vineyards, you would address this letter to "Riverhead, NY 11901"; however, if you want to actually go to Martha Clara Vineyards, you would go to Northville.

It is important to understand that Northville is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name as part of their mailing address.

For those who may not be familiar with Northville:

Northville is a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the northeast part of the Town of Riverhead, in the northeast part of Suffolk County, along the Riverhead/Southold town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Northville in the Town of Riverhead is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Mattituck and the Hamlet of Laurel in the Town of Southold (the Riverhead/Southold Town line); on the south by the Hamlet of Jamesport and the Hamlet of Aquebogue; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Riverhead.

Northville is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name as part of their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Northville have a "Riverhead, NY 11901" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): //www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
