hey i just moved to baldwin harbor 2 months ago. I believe our flood insurance was 300 for the year. We did not HAVE to get flood insurance, as its not in the flood zone. We picked it up at our option. Most people say it isn't worth it, but for the first year, it didnt seem like a big deal to get it just to be safe.
allows you to put in an address and it will give you premium options. The National Flood Insurance Program covers up to 250K for the home and to 100K for your stuff.
I would definately look into some of those web-sites that were mentioned above or call an insurance company and get an exact quote. From what I understand they re-drew all the flood maps recently and that placed people in different categories therefore increasing the premiums. I think you may even be able to transfer the flood policy from the previous owner since it is a federal policy. We pay about 650.00 a year under the old rates which you are grandfathered into as long as you don't let it lapse. Depending on how close you are to the water I would also price out the home owners insurance, that can get a little expensive.

This is correct...
The new flood maps go into effect Sept 11th I believe. There are parts of Nassau and Suffolk that will now be in the 100 year flood plain...and be subject to the higher rate. If you buy flood ins before then...you pay the lower rate.
Newsday had an article about this a few months ago. According to them, the areas added to the flood zones are "the remainder of the City of Long Beach not already in the flood zone, most of North Woodmere and parts of Oceanside, Island Park, Valley Stream and other communities. In Suffolk the new areas include parts of the villages of Amityville, Asharoken and Sagaponack and other portions of Babylon and Huntington towns."
Don't know if "other communities" includes parts of Baldwin Harbor but it might since Oceanside and Valley Stream were mentioned.
