A few years ago I bought a house in Shirely with a finnished basement. My intentions were to rent the house, yet I never went through the rental registration process. The house is/has been rented for a few years now and I am going through the process to get the permit and make it all legal. Unfortunatly, the town is very vague on the codes/laws/rules, and they seem to change with each person you speak to.

I was wondering if anyone got a rental registration permit on a house with a finnished basement and what that basement was like. I figure if someone has similar setup/situation, then the town MAY be ok with it. Here are the main issues/questions...

1) I was first told that I would need an egress window. Now I am being told that since it has an seperate OSE and another stair access into the main house, it 's oK? Any ideas?
2) There is a bathroom in the basement. All of the plumbing goes into a pit/tank in the concreet floor and is then pumped out via an ejector pump. What does the town think of this?
3)The oil tank is in the basment in a seperate closet. Does anyone have their oil tank in their finnished basement?
4)What about the burner/boiler? I read on someone's blog that the town made them put up a steel door in front of it. Is there any truth to that?

Any feedback as to the town's views on this matter, or complications anyone has had would be appreciated.

Pretty sure egress windows are a must.
