I took my kids to see the larger than normal waves today at Jones.
I couldn't believe my eyes, the beach is under water up to the board walk. Some areas in the middle and towards the water you could see sand but it was soaking wet! A lady who works there told me it was worse yesterday, the water went into the employees parking lot and said it was pretty deep. They had a lot of the fields closed, the west end mostly.
Scary to think how much of the shore line was lost. I hope this is not a taste of what might be in the hurricane season...are we in for it this year??
yes, I heard that as well. I heard a couple of days ago the rip tides are extremely powerful. This weather pattern is really scary. I hope we do not lose to much of the beach line.
I was at Smith Point before 7am...before they open the booths. They had closed signs up all over and the SCPD was patrolling for anyone going near the water...so I can't imagine they would charge. But I guess you never know :-)
The problem is alot of Jones Beach doesn't have dunes, just a wide stretch of sand between the ocean and the boardwalk. Pretty much nothing to stop the storm surge. I have photos of the huge waves I saw at Robert Moses yesterday. I'll put them up later.

I was a little surprised to see the waves had topped the dunes at Smith Point. There was water up to the FLT 800 Memorial and evidence that water had run all the way down to the tunnels. One of the cops let me get right up to the water with my NOAA badge...and was saying this was the worst since Gloria in 1985.
If you have any pics of water in parking lots or across roads...let me know. We use that stuff to verify flood warnings.
Too bad they dont have any photos of the flooding.
