A gay couple whom I am friends with are having trouble finding a tax preparer who is aware of the tax laws regarding their situation. They recently bought a home, so there are going to be 2 filings and they will have to deal with the $8000.00 tax credit differently than most would. Anybody know of someone with these expertise?

How does this require someone "very knowledgeable"? Non-married people buy houses together all the time. Parents and children, brothers and sisters, guys and gals who live together without being married. It's really not that big of a deal.

It's not a big deal at all. Too many people assume that the tax code is ever so complicated and that their own situation is even more so.

This is a very typical tax situation. Any decent accountant can prepare their taxes.

If your friend and his/her partner wouldn't normally need to have their taxes prepared professionally they should have no problem filing their individual 1040s with Form 5405 and required documentation (HUD statement, I believe). If both are eligible to claim the credit (haven't owned homes w/in last 3 years, income eligible, etc) they can split the credit however they want...50/50, 30/70, 100/0...whatever. If one is NOT eligible the other can claim the entire credit if he/she is a first time homebuyer.
You can't file electronically if claiming the credit, since you need to include your documentation. But you can have a refund as direct deposit which would get to you about 2 weeks sooner than a check.

You can always call the IRS 1-800-866-1040 to verify eligibility and how to claim the credit. No identifying info needs to be given if you just have a general question. Maybe IRS.gov (NOT dot com!) would have enough info to help them out.
It's a shame that so many people pay good money to have really very simple tax returns prepared, especially with so much free-filing material available from the IRS(.gov) website.
