I just moved into my first house and paying for oil for the first time and wondering how often everyone fills up. We moved in and had a delivery Oct. 1, Dec. 31 and just now to my surprise had to get a delivery today cause we had less then 1/4 left. We didn't even have 2 full months. Plus I only keep the house at 64 during the day and at 61 at night. Just wondering if this is the norm or maybe somethings not right. I don't have a hot water heater, only have the oil burner heating our water. Could that be eating up my oil?

Thumbs up Oil Delivery

It's hard to say what your oil usage since you didn't say how big your oil tank is, i'm assuming around 275 - 300 gallons?

I keep my house at 64 during the day and 66 at night (61 for you, wow, is your mother in law living with you :-)? )
We get deliveries around every 3 - 4 weeks during actually cold winter months (about 150 - 180 gallons) per fillup. I think i ended up calculating between 5.5 -7 gallons per day. I have 2100 foot house with a single zone

This all depends on the condition of the home windows , doors , insulation square footage , how old is the boiler ? when was the last time it was tuned up ? when was the last time the chimney was cleaned ?

7 gal/day sounds pretty high to me, but then you have only one zone so who knows whats in play.
To the OP....
Usually they will come and refill once a month or 6 weeks. They will fill upto 7/8th of your tank from where you are at that point. From the data you provided, I am guessing you have a 275 gal tank, and you keep your house much colder than the average person here, hence you should be happy you went so long on 3/4th of your tank.

once a month in the winter, approximately 150-175 gallons per fill up this year. Last year was warmer so the average gallons per month was less.

^^^^
This

I get my last delivery late April/early May and do not get another delivery until early-mid November. Burner takes care of my hot water. I celebrate the day each year that I shut off the damn thermostat, usually early April.
We do not turn the heat on until Halloween. Sometimes early November. It's the law in my house.

66 at night? I usually have it at 68 during the day and 55 at night.
Invest in a down comforter - and you too can drop the thermostat.

Of course, if you have young kids at home then you should keep it a little warmer.

Normally have it filled twice a year, but I have a large 500 gallon tank.

Ha, i have a 1 year old who won't stay under her blankets so 55 is not quite an option here. I was paying 3.99/gallon last year and this year it's 2.32/gallon so can afford the "luxury" of keeping it a little warmer.
