what type of community are you looking for (village setting, beachy area, plain old suburbia, etc): really we are open to that! we have kids so somewhere where schooling is good i have lived in a big city as well as country so it really dont matter. we just do not want to move into a bad neighborhood!

!
Good money is the most loaded expression in the world when you are talking about the NYC Metro area. Do you make good money in New Mexico or do you make good money for this area? A rental budget of $2000 a month is barely middle class on Long Island...especially if you want to live within an hour's drive of the city.

We need some extra info to help you as other have said.

Where do you work?
How old are your kids? Public or private school?
Whats an acceptable commute for you?
Drive or LIRR?
Rent/buy? $$s willing to pay.

Sounds like you'd be looking for a 3-bedroom rental. In that price range, I'm thinking Levittown or Hicksville.

Ahh..just want long island needs...more renters who dont pay taxes while their kids get a free ride with the school system.

Try Queens...you will be within an hour of New York City.

.

What? If they need a three bedroom rental, it'll most likely turn into a whole house rental. The tenant pays rent to the landlord, who in turn is responsible for the RE taxes--but doesn't live there.
So yes, they do pay RE taxes, albeit indirectly - therefore no "free ride" and no tax deduction for the RE taxes either...

Am I missing something??

That is an old tired argument. They are paying rent for their residence. It is not an indirect way of paying taxes. As we all know, if taxes declined, rents will not go down.
