I'll have the local a/c guys come in and give me quotes to see where I am.
my furnace is Ruud not sure how old this one is but I just changed the blower last fall. I'll check out Amana but most likely go with Rheem/Ruud if the price diff. is major.

it's funny WJFM mentioned the ductless unit, I did actually consider a ductless unit for my den, but as a supplement to the current system.

Thanks again!

Dix Hills AC installed an Amana unit at my house. They said it was the best. I had a York that was only 6 years old and had to be replaced.

My next door neighbor had an ac installation done with a different company and one of the workers told me that Amana was the worst and they pushed the Rheem models.

You'll hear different stories from everyone. I wonder if there's a Consumers Report review somewhere?

It might be cheaper, but if there's an issue with the unit, who is going to perform warranty work? The installer didn't supply the unit, so the only thing he has to back is the installation, not the unit.

the MOST important thing about CAC is the installation...Brands vary, most are dependable....but any brand will fail if it is installed improperly.

Have the company you go with do an evaluation to determine the tonage needed. Too many times contractors just go with the previous size which may be too large. Have you considered a heat pump? it would provide an efficent heat source for the fall/early winter weather, it may run cheaper than gas/oil in your parts. Brand wise I have always had Carrier with no problems. There is a federal reabate for energy efficent heating /cooling Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency : ENERGY STAR .

Good luck
