Hi everyone,
I currently live in the midwest and will be relocating to LA in September 2010. My vehicle is registered here and I'm not sure if my relocation to California will be 6 mos., 9 mos., or permanent...

How long can I get away with NOT registering my car in CA? I don't want the hassle if I'm not sure what I'll be doing for a few months. According to the Cali DMV, I need to register it within 20 days of arriving and being gainfully employed? My insurance agent here sort of rolled her eyes and said, "Uh-uh, you don't."

What's the lowdown?

i see out of state plates almost every day here, i don't think it's a big deal. however, i did hear that the state is losing a lot of money from this so there was supposed to be a crack down.

I report any neighbors living here with out of state plates, we have a hot line for it. We pay the tax, so should you. Cops will spot you anyway, always the same car at the same time of morning or afternoon, just some of the signs that give you away.

I've moved to California three times since 1999. In each case, I waited until the current registration of my vehicle was about to expire before I applied for California plates. I did the same thing in the states I moved to from California. It all balances out. Unless you move next door to a tattletale.

Thanks cubancoffee and BRinSM! Very helpful

Ferretkona, if I see someone peeping through the curtains at me, I'll assume it's you.

I was hit by a out of state tagged pick up once. Without current registration the cops said tough luck. I do not peek in windows, care less what anyone does in their home. If I see you everyday driving past my house I will report you.

This will probably kill eagle7...

I am from Illinois and registering my car in California was cheaper. Why are you going to move here if you're not even sure you're going to stay?

I drove a car with colo plates for over 3 yrs in ca & never got stopped once. I then sold it & the buyer drove it for 8 months until the tags expired. Even if you get stopped the cop cant prove when you moved to ca. The state screws us enough & i dont snitch.

Why is it when I support the law, some choclo accuses me of breaking the law as a peeking Tom?
If you can not afford to move here legally, stay where you are. We have enough illegal law breakers here.
