Why is Bakersfield so much cheaper than LA or its surrounding areas. Ive been looking up rent houses on craigslist and a 4 bdrm 2 bth. house runs from 1100 to 1700 for a really nice house. with a gardener and water and trash included on alot of them. theres no way you would find a deal like that in LA right? Its only like an hour and a half (110 miles) from LA. WHy so inexpensive? I know it has to do with "just cause its LA" Just curious cause im moving to Bakersfield in September for a job transfer so.. But if you have any thoughts or comments on this then it would be apprectiated. Oh and if you know any other info that may come to be useful then thank you

As the realtors say, "Location, location, location!" SoCal vs. central valley. Ocean beaches vs. flat, level fields and dust. Lots to do vs. there's no there, there. Vibrant social scene and the arts vs. country music and demolition derby. Air with some auto and industrial smog vs. air full of insecticides and other agricultural chemicals. Multi-culturalism vs. Little Mexico. Great dining opportunities vs. mediocre at best. Huge choice in neighborhoods vs. somewhat insular. Ocean breezes on a good day vs. searing heat.

Just a thought or two!

For once I agree with you.

I make fun of Bakersfield as well as other Valley cities but I also like the fact that there are places in California that aren't expensive or chi-chi.

Be still my heart! The world must be coming to an end.

I lived in Santa Monmica for a time and worked in L.A.s financial district. I also spent three miserable years in Bakerfield (job related). These were my honest observations.

If your work will be in Bakersfield your best bet is to live in Bakersfield. Commuting from Santa Paula or Santa Clarita over the "grapevine" is a hassle. The "grapevine" is a winding freeway over the Tejon pass and can back up when the weather is very windy or snowing [it is over 4000 feet]. Given the choice of living in Santa Paula or Santa Clarita versus Bakersfield, I would choice the first two towns. But the commute into the San Joaquin valley would take at least an hour if not more one way.

Bakersfield is very hot and not all that exciting but you are not going to have super excitement in Santa Paula [a small farm town] or Santa Clarita [a large suburb] either. Some people live up in Tehachapi in the mountains and commute into Bakersfield but even that can take a lot of time.
