Just curious, when does the school year start for junior high and high school aged students in Los Angeles? Thanks.

For Malibu High I seem to remember it was something like the 7th or 8th of September I would guess that most of them will be around the same time within a few days one way or another.

Generally first week after Labor Day, but the last two years it's started before Labor Day because of the lateness in the month.

You can visit the LAUSD web site for that information. In Oxnard we have 4 differant districts that all have differant start dates. With Oxnard School District they have a year round program and it depends on what track you are on. My kids attend the Rio School District in North Oxnard and we start September 7th.

A junior high generally means that the school has a 7th and 8th grade. Middle school can be a version of 6th, 7th, and 8th, or it can have 7th, 8th, and 9th, or it can have 6th thru 9th.

Our schools in our district now are K - 5, and the Junior High is now a middle school with 6th - 8th. In other districts near us they still have a k - 6 format with a 7th - 8th Junior High.

well it depends. a lot of LAUSD schools are still on multi track system (classes year round). with the building of new schools many have gone back to traditional school year (sep. to june). some charter schools start in mid august as do many private schools.
it really depends on the school.

From Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines
"Even though the ads are reminding us that it’s back to school season, thousands of LAUSD students are already beginning their second month of the school year. In fact, what we think of as the traditional start of school is about to change even more in LAUSD.

Traditionally, the vast majority of LAUSD students begin school in September. This year, summer vacation will end early for thousands of those students because 21 campuses are switching to an “early start” calendar for the 2010-2011 school year.

Three schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)—Arleta, Sun Valley and Polytechnic high schools—will begin the first day of school on Monday, August 9. Another 17 senior high schools will start the new school year a week later on Monday, August 16. They are: Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Cleveland, El Camino Real, Jefferson, Kennedy, Leadership in Entertainment and Media Arts, Lincoln, Maywood Academy, Monroe, Northridge Academy, Daniel Pearl Journalism and Communications Magnet, Reseda, Sylmar, Taft, Van Nuys and Verdugo high schools.

In addition, South East Elementary School #3 will also open early, August 16.

Starting classes before Labor Day allows students to take end-of-semester exams before the winter break, instead of two months later in February. Research shows that the earlier calendar helps students retain more material before taking those tests. Also, on the earlier schedules, students cover more material and are better prepared before taking the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and Advanced Placement (AP) tests.

On the traditional (September to June) calendar, most LAUSD students will start school on Monday, September 13. That date includes many students at campuses no longer forced to operate year-round on multi-track calendars because of overcrowding thanks to the construction of new schools in densely populated areas.

Whenever your first day of school begins, let me welcome students and staff to another opportunity to excel academically at LAUSD."
