Suburan Long Beach neighborhoods close to the college include El Dorado Park, Los Altos, Park Estates. All are very nice, family oriented neighborhoods.

If you want something more coastal with some shops and eateries within walking distance (yet still close to the college) look at Belmont Shore/Heights, Naples, or the Peninsula. Again very nice. Belmont Shore has a nice mix that includes a lot of college students.

If you want to optimize for splitting the distance of your commutes look at Bixby Knolls or Cal Heights. They are an easy drive to Torrance and the college. Very nice family neighborhoods.
