Me too. My goodness but he must have a large house. (Yes, kidding.)

Where on earth could one ride a bike indoors??? Seriously. Anybody know? Now I'm curious.

Riding on the sidewalk is always illegal - although their are some areas with no shoulders where it is safer to be on the sidewalk - but bikes should be walked if this is done - it is called a sideWALK not a sideRIDE! Usually the impression that it is legal to ride on a sidewalk is due to lax enforcement - some cities don't think it is worthwhile to cite bicyclists who break the law.

I try to minimize time on the street, and ride in the Los Angeles, Rio Hondo, and San Gabriel rivers.

FYI, google maps has a bike route overlay on it's maps. It is in beta but after identifying the green bike routes you can go to street view and really get a feel for what that route would be like.

Bicycle rollers - Wikipedia

Yes, with rollers you can ride your regular bike indoors. My college roommate had one and I tried it a few times. Balance is a bit tricky, even with the gyroscopic effect of the spinning wheels. It's also pretty noisy for your downstairs neighbors.

I was thinking about those trainers.

i have an indoor trainer but i have a hard time getting motivated to use it. riding indoors for an extended amount of time is quite boring. however, they are a great workout and make you sweat what seems to be an almost unhuman amount.

One can ride indoors at the Velodrome that was built for the 1984 Olympics located in Carson. Olympic athletes train here and their are open to the public hours. Can't ride your road bike here - but if track riding is your thing - this is the place.

Outdoors, of course. Preferably on a dedicated path. I bought a bell to alert pedestrians to my approach so I wouldn't freak them out, but sometimes it does more harm than good. Most people don't recognize a bell for what it is and tend to stop and turn, or--for some inexplicable reason--jump sideways at random! Sometimes it's just better to give them a wide berth and not let them know you're coming until you're already past.

According to the California law, riding on the sidewalk is allowed so long as you do not exceed the speed of pedestrians on the sidewalk. In other words, if you coast along at walking speeds, it's okay. Laws can vary from city to city, though.

And as everyone else has said, riding on the sidewalk is much more dangerous than riding in the street. Drivers usually pull across the sidewalk without looking in order to see what's coming down the street. There are lots of blind corners that open onto sidewalks. My only vehicle accident in thousands of miles of riding was on a sidewalk. I was riding at walking speed while carrying flowers when a driver pulled into me from a blind alley.

It was just a bump and I didn't even go down. I stopped and made sure I was unhurt and his bumper wasn't scratched, then we went on our ways.

My standard speed is upwards of 20mph and there's no sidewalk I'd try that on. Too many cracks, roots, and non-handicap curbs.
