El Porto is my favorite. Long Beach is my second favorite because it's warmer than most other LA beaches and it's great for a relaxing time since there aren't big waves.

El Porto was my high school hang out! Oh gosh the memories are priceless :-)

Bolsa Chica State Beach is my all-time favorite. Firepits onsite, they charge for parking(keeps the riffraff out), and excellent bodyboarding.
I learned how to body surf in Seal Beach. We would stay with relatives in Long Beach & literally live at the beach. Surf is good in Santa Cruz but once my brothers & I experienced the warm ocean in SoCal, we came back for more. The surf culture is a great influence on kids & promotes outdoor exercise.

Of-course, the all-time best beach in California for body surfing is "The Wedge" in Newport

Naples, - with kids, you would love Corona Del Mar. It seldom gets large surf and is frequented by Mom's kids, day camps, and a lot of international tourists....although it can get crowded, it is still a beautiful beach.
My favorite with my kids, was Emerald Bay (private), but a gorgeous 3/4 mile of pristine beach with no one near you for a hundred yards.
After my kids grew out of needing my observation, I started surfing again and frequented "Old Man's" and, (if I have time for the drive)...."Trestles 2". I don't mind the hike down to 1000 steps, either since it limits the amount of tourists.

Newport's Balboa Pier. Dockweiler is fun, but the novelty wears off after you start to notice that you're losing your hearing from all the planes leaving LAX.

Santa Monica is ahead in this pole? WTF? For beers and food on 3rd Street? For winos or bangers on the sand?

Pirate's Cove where the nudes were / are? We used to paddle around from further north to try to get a glimpse of the sun bathers. Plus there was a decent break off one of those points.
