The Valley is the San Fernando Valley. It is located over the hills from Hollywood/West Hollywood. It is comprised of various neighborhoods including Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Woodland Hills, North Hollywood. It is part of the city of LA but it is separated from the basin (i.e. "the city") by the hills. The Valley is largely suburban except for the Ventura Blvd. corridor (which is where I live). Studio City and Sherman Oaks have a lot of young professionals clustered around Ventura Blvd.

Pasadena is very nice place to live, but it's not a beach town.
I think you could get a decent one bedroom for 1,500, but you have to realize that a lot of the buildings in L.A. aren't new. They are older buildings and don't always have the upgraded appliances that you are looking for.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the South Bay as an option. You could easily get a one bedroom, beach apartment in Hermosa Beach or Redondo Beach. And since you have an online job, then the commute wont be too much of a problem.
L.A. is a great place to live, you have many options.
