The question from OP sounds so familiar for me. I received my MSEE from ucla many years ago. Then I moved to silicon valley and worked there for a few years.

My feeling is that Los Angeles does not have too many high tech EE jobs. It is true that there are some aerospace jobs and some high tech jobs scattering around. However, I do not see the concentration of the high tech jobs in Los Angeles area as with the silicon valley area. People would disagree and claim that there are some high tech jobs here and there. But, trust me, there are not the same types of jobs that you will get in silicon valley. If you are VERY luck in Los Angeles, the dream job for you might be getting a computer graphics related job from the studio such as Disney anmination and SKG, etc.

On the other hand, Orange County and San Diego areas might have something that would interest you. Broadcom, Seagate (I think they are in OC) are in orange county, and a bunch of wireless companies are in San Diego area.

My two cents.

You are correct in that it's not concentrated. There is no Silicon Valley or Denver Tech Center or anything else, it's a big wide open area with the jobs all over. Used to be some continuity, but not any more. That said, there is still a decent concentration of aerospace in the South Bay with all the defense contractors and companies like SpaceX located there.

What about when you take OC and the Santa Barbara area into account?

I'd second that about some really interesting jobs in the space/aerospace industry in SoCal. I've got two friends working there involved with making instrumentation/control systems for pilots more "nintendo", ie working with eyemovements rather than hand on joystick, etc. to be able to do more things at once - flying, dropping bombs, shooting cannon's, while doing dogfight maneuvors, etc. Also civilian equivalent "smart-control" systems in the human-machine interface. They have very interesting work-team structures with aerospace and electrical engineers working with psychologists and physicians. Only downside is frequent trips out to the desolate desert 13 Palms, Edwards bases. Either boring lifestyle if you live in Palmdale/Lancaster etc. or long commutes from The Valley/ Santa Clarita area.
