Going on vaction for a week in LA and we'll be based in Santa Monica driving a rental to get around to the typical tourist attractions and sights.

Any advice on general safety? Do's and Dont's. Areas to avoid etc.
I'm used to travelling and have been to many countries in Eurpoe, Asia and Africa so I consider myself pretty "street smart" but there are always things to think of and areas to avoid.

You are certainly staying in a very safe spot (Santa Monica).

While the U.S. does have a higher violent crime rate than western Europe you'll find that most of the crime occurs in the "bad" parts of town.

Most of the tourist attractions are in relatively "nice" areas of town. Also, the crime in Los Angeles is at 40 year lows so despite the image of LA as a gang infested cesspool, this is a pretty safe big city.

Are you planning on walkibg ariund at night? Resorts and resort towns are ok for that. During the day not too many places are mortal danger but if it looks bad it may be. They dont have anything to visit in those places.

Downtown has a lot that tourists would want to see. Also, much of downtown is safe at night and downtown is generally safe during the day (only parts of Skid Row and some areas on the fringes of downtown are dangerous during the day)

Central L.A. includes some areas that tourists might be interested in seeing like Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, and Echo Park, as well as LACMA. Griffith Park is between Central L.A. and the San Fernando Valley and tourists usually want to see that.

Long Beach has very nice areas, very bad areas, and in between areas.

Downtown is quite safe outside of skid row and Long Beach is very safe and nice near the harbor.

If you stay out of the valley, hills, basin and beaches, you should be OK.

Don't go to South Central LA, Watts, Compton, Inglewood.
