Hey, this is me again.
As I was exploring the maps and old photos of Downtown, I found out that just infront of the City Hall there used to be a beautiful brown office building, just opposite to the LA Times building. It is torn down today but I don´t get why there is still it´s basement ?!
Why didn´t they build a park or carpark instead of it? And why the building was torn down at all?
One thing I hate about LA is that so many beutiful Art Deco buildings, which are a historical treasure in my opinion, have been torning down during the years. I hope that you let stay at least the wonderful Eastern building...

It was called California State Building. The only other thing that I can find about is that it was supposedly declared structurally unsafe after the 1971 San Fernando earthquake and it was demolished by 1975. Why they just left the lot sitting there vacant for 35 years, that completely eludes me.

On the SkyscraperPage.com boards, there is a thread called Noirish L. A., which has a ton of pics from L. A. back in the day. I'm pretty sure I've seen some of that building. I'm not sure about city-data.com's policy on posting links, so I'm not going to do so.

Acutally, a quick check of the public records indicates the site you asked about is owned by the State of California......perhaps it is slated to be part of the new park. I can't tell for sure from the site plans I posted.
