What's funny is that you can get away with owning a great cat, such as a lion or tiger, you can keep an aligator or croc in your garage or pool, and if you want to impress your gang, you don't walk a pit bull anymore. You somehow attain or raise a hyena. How's that for respect. All illegal, I think.

L.A. has become much more dog friendly than it used to be. We have dog parks, doggie bakeries, doggie trails...it seems the nicer the area, the more dogs you see being walked. I have a Greyhound and a German Shepard. They go everywhere with me when I'm walking or driving. Pitts have gotten some bad press lately but they aren't barred from doing anything except some landlords don't allow them.

Big difference between a St. Bernard or Yorkie. We're pet friendly, but in the rental business you may find it difficult to move with a dog.

You can try craigslist.com and click on dog and all the rentals that allow dogs will come up and you can talk to the landlord too.

I agree ! Los Angeles area is great if you have dogs...
I'm sure if you do a google search on "dog parks in los angeles"
you will find alot !

On a more serious note... if you are planning on renting an apartment,
please please please don't get an oversized dog such as a
Saint Bernard ! My next door neighbor has 2 of those beauties,
and I know how much work they are ! He lives on an acre of land
and it's just perfect ! They drool something fierce and poop
about the size of my horse ! It wouldn't be fair to keep them
in a small apartment all day !

Pitbulls have had alot of bad press lately ! They are such wonderful
dogs if they are raised in a loving home. It's the ones that
have been raised to fight, that we need to worry about .
I guess any harsh treatment of any animal will make it aggressive !

One big dog you can have in an apartment (if your landlord will let you) is a Greyhound. They are wonderful, gentle creatures and prefer to live indoors and sleep 23 hours a day on your sofa. They have no body fat and thin skin don't to well in a yard. I have one I rescued and he's a joy to me every day. A dog not to have in an apartment...any of the cattle dogs...Australian Shepard, Keplie, etc. They like to run too much.

My dogs live indoors and I walk them 4 times a day: morning, lunch, dinner, bedtime.

I recomend a Yorkie..so cute :-) I have a little pug..cute if you like the smooshed face look :-) While my bf and I were looking for apartments we found telling them you had a small dog went over well but until you said small you could tell they weren't too sure about it.

Talking I love yorkies

You can tell that from my name. I don't live in LA but I have researched apts there & the policies seem to be similar to what i find in NY & Philly. There may be certain breed restictions but Yorkies are generally accepted in any building that accepts dogs. The one thing you have to worry about with yorkies is that the tend to not know they are small. The sometimes try to pick fights with larger animals. If you do get a yorkie livng in a place that has breed restrictions or small dogs only is a benefit to you. The one thing you will most likel have is a pet rent in most luxury type buildings or at least that is what I have encountered! It about an extra 25-50 a month per pet most of the time.

I love my babies!
