While crime is not as bad as in the past, traffic, road conditions, and car accidents are worse than ever and present much more danger, therefore negating some of the gains made in fighting crime when looking at overall safety.

Traffic fatalities in L.A. county (as of 2008) are 35% lower than they were in 1991. And that is just the pure number of traffic fatalities. If you look at the rate (per 100k individuals, or number of cars, or whatever), it has declined even more steeply.

There are far more accidents than there were in 1991.
Even if people don't get killed, cars are totalled and people are injured. And things have gotten worse since 2008.

And also maybe something that compares L.A. to cities in other parts of the country, and maybe versus previous years?

I can't seem to get people to grasp the simple fundamental demographic reason for this decrease all over the United States: the Boomers are outgrowing violent crime. Also, only stupid criminals use guns anymore. Computer crime /ID theft is the new thing. The LE reps won't acknowledge this because they want to keep their funding at current levels.
