The Catholic and Mexican influence in California is deeply felt in the tradition of roadside shrines, or "descansos", marking the place where someone has died - typically in an automobile accident.
Last I checked there were 40,000 auto-related deaths per year in the United States. The price of progress, I suppose. If these people were killed by a disease there would be national panic and quarantines, but I digress ...
