Hi-We are relocating from Missouri to the L.A. area. We have teens in High School and my husband will be working in an office in Beverly Hills. People have mentioned that Sherman Oaks as a place to live. How difficult is the commute? Where is a good high school near there? We'd appreciate any hints or advice. Thanks-

Right over the hills. No freeway needed. Just take Beverly Glen.. sure it is congested! but it's much more peaceful than the alternatives.

In addition to Beverly Glen, there is also Coldwater Canyon which takes you straight into Beverly Hills from the Valley.

Most of the people I knew who grew up in Sherman Oaks went to Grant. It used to be a great school 25 years ago or so (it was nicknamed the "Uni Of The Valley"), but it's assuredly gone to crap like all of the other LAUSD comprehensive schools (including Uni) A few in the northernmost part of S.O. went to Van Nuys, which even in the late '70s/early 80s didn't have a good reputation. Given that Van Nuys is much worse than it was then, it must be a nightmare.
North Hollywood High would cover Studio City not S.O. Given what's happened in the Valley in the last 20 years I'm sure it's a crap school now. There are some areas of Studio City that might be in the Grant area.
Check out the magnets and charters in the area, those are LAUSD's only worthwhile schools. Otherwise the district is a completely dysfunctional failure, and it's difficult to comprehend how terrible it is for someone who hasn't experienced it.

Everyone here has given you good advice, but you'll still want to kill yourself. Really, it's just not as rosy as it's sounding. I would also second the private school options of you have to be in SO. Honestly, the public schools there are mind-bogglingly disgusting. You'll be ASTONISHED at what your kids aren't learning. It would be laughable if it weren't so sad.

Majourn, youre right. I forgot about Grant. Even though its located in Van Nuys (13000 Oxnard) near the North Hollywood border it does indeed serve some S.O. residents. I would never want to send my kids to Grant, Van Nuys or North Hollywood.
