I use both almost daily for all parts of So Cal, and while both are certainly not infallible, Goog traffic seems to have a healthy edge on accuracy.

Google Traffic uses crowdsourcing for traffic data (feedback from users' GPS signals) which allows street traffic.

However, Sigalert is easier to see on your screen, bigger bolder lines for freeways and a few highways. Google is a little tougher using a smartphone in a car.

I'm using a widescreen LED monitor at my desk while I advise drivers out in the field of WTF is slowing them and what alt routes to take if any.

Plus, Google Maps is integrated with all of the info from the Waze App, which allows users to "post" or update accidents, road debris, even locations of spotted police officers. I've used Google Maps for a few years now and the accuracy has become so good that I can drive from Huntington Beach to Pasadena during rush hour, and even with random accidents I've always arrived within a 5 minute window of Google's initial ride estimate.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it doesn't account for the use of HOV lanes, so that usually shaves about 10-15% off the estimated ride time in most cases.

I don't know who counseled you that commute would be over an hour. I commute all way from the Ocean Park / Main St side of Santa Monica to Northridge, and it's about 30 minutes in the morning, and ~50 on the way home because of the 405/10 bottleneck. You'd probably have something like 25 minutes in the morning, and 40 on the way back. People going the other way experience much longer commute times as that's the main flow of traffic. Yours, like mine, would be a reverse commute.
