I think it has alot of potential. How long will it take 'till it turns around?

I think it has so much potential, but it seems to have a ways to go before the gentrification downtown and in Koreatown is able to make its way there. Either way it is still one of the most interesting parts of the city and I hope it doesn't change too much, love the Central American influence of Westlake.

I felt safe walking through MacArthur Park on a Saturday night around 9 and leaving around 1 AM - though I was going to a large event in the area so there probably were more people than usual in the neighborhood.

Not sure I'd want to live there at this point (and I consider East Hollywood to be a potential next-neighborhood).

It WILL gentrify, but my guess is ten more years. There's too many of the row houses where you can't yet fix and rent or fix and flip at a profit. The area between 7th and James Woods, Union and Alvarado is particularly terrible.

And it's incredibly unsafe at night. Anyone indicating otherwise is quite naive.

I believe you since you live pretty close to this neighborhood, but according to Mapping LA, it's actually safer than Hollywood, where I live (actually, much safer).

Is the big danger being mugged?

It's possible many crimes in that area are unreported because of its high number of illegal immigrants.

Ahh that makes sense. I though it was odd to have such a non-high crime rate.

Fixed for you.

Illegal immigrants has nothing to do with it (although it does help).

The other issue, is that LAPD's public site is down, and the LA Times Data may be incomplete, although I have no deal evidence of that.
