I live in SF, and try to follow LA's transit developments. But I keep getting confused about what's actually in the process of being built or has been 100% approved for construction.

Can somebody please provide me with the cliffnotes version of LA's current subway development? Not what has been proposed or "maybe" will get approved, but what is for certain going to happen and where? So many of the websites I've checked don't seem updated and things seem to perpetually keep getting set back.

Is the Expo line really going to open in Santa Monica 2015??

Thanks

The Regional Connector light rail subway is in the beginning stages of construction. It will link the Blue Line/Expo Line light rail which now end at 7th St. Metrocenter with the Gold Line at Union Station. This is a connector within downtown.
The Expo Line light rail is now open to Culver City. It is under construction to Santa Monica and will be open in a few years.
The Foothill extension of the Gold Line light rail is now under construction from Pasadena east to Azusa.
The Purple Line subway extension to Westwood is approved and funded, though the available funding will take many years to build it out. The first phase of the project, extending the subway from Wilshire & Western to Wilshire & La Cienega is beginning construction.
The Crenshaw line from the Expo/Crenshaw Green Line station to the Aviation Green Line station has been approved and construction documents are being prepared. The line is basically planned but a Leimert Park station, very much desired by the neighborhood, is listed as an optional station, to be built if existing funds allow.

Other projects are further back. The nature of the Green Line-LAX connector has to be determined. The route for the extension of the Gold Line east from East Los Angeles has not been finalized. Transit corridors in the east San Fernando Valley and Sepulveda Pass, as well as some other locations, are being studied. This is the largest transit construction program in the country.

The only truly definite system will be Expo part 2, which should be open in 2015 or 2016. There is still some risk that the current lawsuits will kill it, but, construction is definitely underway right now.

The lawsuits were taken by the State Supreme Court so they can set a precedent for suing supposed EIR violations. It's gonna happen.

Gold Line extension is happening for sure, no opposition on that. Crenshaw Line's for sure. Other planned lines are most likely gonna happen barring some strange occurence.

It's so annoying that the west side doesn't get any subway system....I mean West Hollywood really could use it.

The Foothill extension of the Gold Line is under construction--its bridge over the 210 is almost complete. As for the Regional Connector and the Purple Line extension they could conceivably be stopped, but that almost never happens with projects that are approved, funded, and beginning construction. It hasn't happened in LA.

My sister lives in Santa Monica and when I visited I remarked on certain street projects near her house and 3rd Street Promenade. Aside from any transit development news I can relate that she says much of it's in preparation for the rail terminus.

She's mixed about it. The neighborhood's already pretty active. But everyone's anticipating the train, however they feel. It's a reality.

Expo Line 2 and Gold Line Extension to Azusa for sure. Both will be done on schedule around late-2015 or so.

Regional Connector and Purple Line Subway extension could still be stalled by lawsuits and such.

L.A. seems to be divided by sensible folks who know what's needed for a city and dumbass people who can't see past their selfish views.

A city this size should have it's own full blown transit system by now. But generation after generation there's a group of people for who knows what reason enjoy killing these plans.
