I wondered If race/gender/percieved class would effect the service you get in a store and so I would go into X amount of stores dressed up really nice and I found little to no evidence my race or gender (I'm an African American male) played any role in the service I recieved. Then I would go into X amount of stores dressed with baggy pants or jeans with holes in them, plain t-shirts, dirty shoes. I found that my apperance affected my serivce. Either I didnt get any (most of the time, this was the case) or I would be asked if I was looking for something in a very low tone instead of the usual upbeat one. After I finished my experiment, I took it upon myself to see if showing I had a form of payment would change associates attitudes if i was dressed not so good. I dressed in the usual bum clothes and when I wasnt getting any service, I would walk up to one, pull out my CC and ask if they took them. Thats how I catch them in a trap. When they see I have a form of payment, then they do a complete 360 on me. I did most of these experiments on Ventura Blvd and on Santa Monica in West Hollywood by the way, not big box chains because not all of them require you to give service if you arent asked to do so by the customer.
I guess that makes sense... Though Ventura Blvd and Santa Monica in West hollywood are probably the most racist retail store areas in La county. You'd have a different experience on Rodeo Road, hell, even Rodeo Drive

Santa Monica strikes me as almost the epitome of beach community, west LA preppy.

-The decline of mom and pop stores from 20, 25 years ago. It's all gap, banana republic now.

-Very, very liberal politics (i.e. the peoples republic of santa monica). There could be a Prius statue in front of city hall and it wouldn't look out of place.

-Just the whole soccer mom vibe. There's a lot of group think....everyone dressing the same, sipping the same starbucks, etc. Very different than more individualistic Venice, or Hollywood, etc.

I would say the middle of SM, between Colorado and Montana is one of the preppiest areas of LA.
