So, I was confused on the subway yesterday.. (transfer, live)

Comming to the red line from Hollywood and Western, I came across these things that looked like ATM machines. I figured this is where I pay. I payed 35 cents. And a ticket popped out. I thought it would be more expensive. So I walked up to the gates, and thought I had to insert it or scan it.. No, just walk through.

So I could have easily walked through the gate and not pay..

The ticket vending machines are pretty much the standard issue for transit systems (LA's are identical to Boston's actually) and you definitely did not pay the right amount of fare... It is 1.50 per ride (i.e. you gotta pay for transfers, dumb but that's the way it is). Personally I don't care if you evade the fare but know that you are looking at a 350 dollar fine if caught - I've seen people get caught, and from what I hear they aren't exactly forgiving if you don't know what you are doing.

Actually I am really confused now, you have to use a TAP card to pay your fare (it has been a huge controversy), so I have no idea what that ticket you got was. The turnstiles are not locked yet but they are in the process of locking them, at which point you will have to use said TAP card (which is bought at the vending machines) on the reader which allows you to pass through.

For someone who encourages LA to become like NYC, you must not ride the subway much!

Yeah, LA has an honor system for paying. I was on either the Gold or Expo line and saw someone just walk straight through. I guess you can get away with it if nobody is manning the station, but paying is the right thing to do.

I haven't ridden the subway in L.A. since i was a kid. I been wanting to, but I don't live too close to the subway. Which is why I want it to expand and hopefully it can come near where I live. And the bus is always late.

Took PT in Chicago which was cool.

And in Mexico city when I went with my uncle to visit relatives. It was just weird. IDK what the 35 cents were for then..

I hated the El in Chicago. Compared to other transit systems, it sucks. But at least the 2 main lines run 24 hours.

I find this post amusing just because it is you posting. I also find it amusing that you don't know what the standard metro fare is.

Anyway, the pay stations at the metro could use better signage/instructions. I remember trying to ride earlier this year for the first time since TAP transitioned and it took me a bit to figure out what the hell a TAP card was. Was confused why I was paying an extra dollar on top of the 1.50 transit fair. And the on screen instructions are pretty terrible.

These are the complaints I have heard as well. I relied on Boston's T (and Charlie Card) for so long out there I guess I was used to it. Like I mentioned before the Charlie Card system was very similar to the TAP Card though you could still use paper tickets, which I thought was no longer on option on Metro Rail. The Charlie Card system in Boston is much better than the TAP cards - you can tap twice (i.e. let a friend on with your pass/money) and it was way easier to load money at stores like 7-11.


Red Line to Gold Line at Union Station is really confusing IMO.
